As Todd drove to the courthouse after school, the fear of losing his freedom consumed him. Several of the guys had wished him luck and offered moral support, but their encouragement seemed hollow now that he was actually on the way to his hearing. Frightening questions shot through his mind. Would this be his last day as a free person? What kind of future did he have in store? Todd thought of the big plans he had for his life. What were his chances of winning a basketball scholarship and attending a good college now that he was a violent criminal?

Elizabeth had been right all along. The rivalry between Sweet Valley and Palisades had to stop. Trying to get back at PH would only force them to get back at SVH. It no longer mattered who had started the trouble; the important thing now was ending it. Once and for all.

If only Elizabeth were with him. She made the tough times bearable. He recalled the image of her walking away from him that morning and was tortured by the thought that it might turn out to be the last time he'd ever see her.

The sound of screeching tires and blaring horns shocked him alert. He realized he'd just run a red light at a busy intersection and had narrowly missed causing a huge accident. "Come on!" he said to himself aloud, shaken. "How many stupid mistakes is one guy allowed?"

As Todd turned down the final block and approached his dreaded destination, his stomach began to flutter nervously. The Sweet Valley Courthouse was a sprawling, Colonial-type building surrounded by well-manicured lawns and flower beds. But despite its polished facade, to Todd it looked like a haunted castle of unspeakable horror. His heart thumped wildly as he got out of the car.

He vowed that if the judge was lenient with him, he'd make up for all of the recent lunacy. And the first step he'd take would be to beg Elizabeth's forgiveness—right after he went to Bruce's house and tried to convince the rest of the guys to end the fighting. Surely he could make them see that the whole rivalry was going nowhere.
